Christmas Lists

The holiday season is upon us (we leave tomorrow for Thanksgiving in Boston) and I am trying something new to share Christmas lists. I'm working on mine, Reilly's and Aidan's. The links below will take you to the list and link directly to sites online. I haven't figured how to do this and also shop directly through Shop4zero. Many of the stores are there and you will have to take the extra step. One word on things for Reilly and Aidan. I'm sure you've all heard about the recalls of toys and lead dangers in toys that were thought to be safe. Because of the scares plus our preference for natural and wood toys we really want only toys that have been made with non-toxic materials. I have tried to select such things and also have a list of websites and in some cases discount codes. They are more expensive, but one hand carved wooden animal gets a lot more imaginative play than a cheaper plastic toy.

The Nate Marston Fund

I met with Colorado Rush Soccer Club yesterday and they would like to take the fund into 21 states and continue to grow into other states. Shop4zero will be placed on their web sites as well as my book (as our story and the reason for the Nate Marston Fund). This is exciting news to think that Nate's fund will be helping so many kids. Monthly I will submit a newsletter to the Rush for the electronic mail system which will reach about 74,000 people in all of the states the Rush is currently in and adding to those new states in the future.

I need help with this project.... It is a newsletter reaching out to the soccer community. We want to talk about Nate's Fund, Soccer facts and events, Shop4zero and many other things. It is the many other things that I am looking for that would be of interest to kids, parents, and the Rush that will attract the attention of people and become of interest to them each month. We want them to click on the website, newsletter and find information about soccer, the fund, maybe soccer word games/crossword puzzles, cartoons, etc. Let's make it fun to read for parents and kids. Please send me your thought at my dzine56@yahoo.com email address or post on the blog. I will be presenting The Nate Marston Fund to the coaches here in Colorado in the early Spring. I need help with writing my presentation, ideas, thoughts, etc. Any takers??? :-)

The first newsletter will be going out November 1 and I need information by the 26TH if you are interested.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you and seeing what we can do with Nate's Fund as a family!!!

My book is now published. My web site www.anewnormal.com has all of the details.

Love to all,

Dianna

What a Week I am Having!

Cross-posted from Azamatterofact.

As some of my more frequent visitors know, I have spent the last 10 weeks working as Communications Director and e-campaign Manager for Maggie Rosa for Mayor, a mayoral campaign in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Tuesday was the Primary. Maggie didn't make the general election. I was disappointed but not surprised.

What I found interesting was that I did a pretty good job in sizing up the election as far as turn out and vote totals. While we never developed the "muscle" to implement it, the campaign strategy I devised was based on a total turn out of 6000-6500 voters and figured Maggie needed 1,500 - 2,000 votes to make the primary.

I later remarked privately to Maggie's campaign manager (Deb) that I would consider anything over 500 votes a moral victory. The local paper as well as three of the top candidates I spoke with prior to one of the debates all predicted turn out to be 4,000 to 4,500. This was based on past primaries but the last was between an incumbent and a 27 year old former city councilor. I had a feeling that with 5 major candidates running for an open seat in a city that will have to improve just to reach dysfuntional, the turn out would be significantly higher.

As it turned the total turn out was 7,047. The two winners got 2,065 and 2,038 votes each and Maggie achieved my "moral" victory by collecting 532 votes. I had previously worked on a state senatorial campaign and with Maggie my record on campaigns this year, is a perfect 0-2 but maybe I have a future as a political prognosticator if not as a campaign strategist. Of course I intend to get to 1-2 with the McCain campaign.

On Monday, I was called for Jury Duty. I got selected on a trial alledging Aggravated Assualt and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon and Aggravated Assault and Battery with Intent to Murder. To make matters worse, the victim was a Massachusetts State Trooper. The Jury got the case for deliberation on Wednesday and I was chosen by the judge as the jury foreman. When asked why by some of my fellow jurors, I surmised that it was based on who fell asleep most often during the 3 days of testimony.

What I found fascinating was that for the first three days of the trial, the jurors barely spoke a word to each other. Yet on Thursday morning as we were about to begin deliberations, virtually all of us were talking, joking and laughing. It was as if we knew the seriousness of the task that was laid before us and wanted to relieve the tension. When we finally began, someone said "I really don't know how we are supposed to proceed." It was a "The Excorcist" moment as 11 heads simultaneously rotated and in my direction. It was both fascinating and challenging to be the foreman and managing and directing the deliberation, making sure we stuck to points of evidence and making sure that everyone got heard and felt they had been adequately listened to. We came back with verdicts of Not Guilty in about two hours. Is there a chance that the defendant did it? Yes. Did the Commonwealth of Massachusetts prove it beyond a reasonable doubt? Absolutely not.

When I read the verdict, the sea of blue, Mass. State Troopers and Boston Police Department stormed out of the Court Room. As Jury Foreman, I was the last juror to leave the court room, I saw the defendant, a young black man who I am sure was convinced that he was going away for a long time with tears of relief in his eyes.

So I had the honor of working for a candidate I truly believed in, in an election I felt was critically important and although we were not successful, I think we made it a better campaign. I also had the honor of working with 11 exceptional people who worked dilligently to find the facts and the truth and render a just verdict. We did our civic duty and were proud of that. All in all...not a bad week.

Dianna's Book: Living With Cancer as "A New Normal"

As many of you know my extraordinary Mum has written a book called Living With Cancer as "A New Normal." I have always admired my mum as a strong woman, mother, caregiver, business woman, wife and person in general! I love my mum with all of my heart and am so very proud of her! I will always support her and be there for her. She has done so much for all of us...mostly she gave us more time with my Dad. Mum gave her everything for my dad, my sister and I. Now is the time to be there for her by reading and passing on her book. Not only has she done so much for the people she loves she is doing something for people that have the same experience of cancer. Her book helps others in a way that no other book can. Living With Cancer as "A New Normal" is not only used as a support system and to generate suggestions on how to deal with cancer it is a book about hope and survival for all that cancer touches. Visit her website at A New Normal.
Love to all,

Kaela

Marstons and McCain in New Hampshire

Crossposted from www.azamatterofact.com

Check out the video below. It starts with Senator McCain visiting King Kone even though the visit was after the town hall meeting.

I mentioned in my earlier post that my son Alex and his friend John (Airforce ROTC) came along. Towards the end of the video you will see a woman in a red suit...Woman in Red!...she is Maureen Mooney of the New Hamshire Republican Party and the two young men to her right are John and my son Alex (with the beard.)

I also mentioned in my earlier post that I chatted with Trent Spiner of the Manchester Union Leader. It is great to be quoted in New Hampshire's paper of record.

New Hampshire is the ultimate of retail politics and I was honored to be part of the event. I was equally honored to get a couple of minutes to chat with Senator McCain at King Kone after the Town Hall Meeting.

Here we are. I look a bit more excited than the Senator does.

Justin and Kaela's Wedding

Justin and I just wanted to thank everyone for coming to our wedding! We had so much fun and enjoyed seeing everyone. The only disappointment for us has been not being able to go to Annisquam this summer. We were planning on spending our honeymoon there before Justin's dad and step mom gave us our Jamaica trip. Again thanks for everything and love to all!!!!

Love,
Justin and Kaela Chaffin!

PS Kaela now has the worlds longest name
Kaela Ceil Marston Chaffin!

Well what do you know?

I got a call from Senator McCain's New Hampshire campaign office tonight and I have been invited to join the New Hampshire Leadership Council for the campaign.

I think it may be a bit like Deb's post below...no one else wanted the presidency of the Sewing Circle.

Who knows? Maybe it is just about showing up.

Varios

No misspelling (I tried to misspell "misspell", but it wouldn't let me), that is my Spanish studies sneaking into the blog. I guess I'm following in my father's footsteps (actually, that would be nice taken literally - Madrid, Cuernavaca?) starting to study Spanish upon retirement. I am using Rosetta Stone and find it an excellent program. It's drawback is that it does not provide a memory chip for the old mind. Best of all, it is free through our library.

Congrats, Jeff, for being acknowledged for all your efforts.

I too have been highly honored by being offered the presidency of the Annisquam Sewing Circle. The offer was made in light of my long weeks of service for the organization. I accepted as a co-president. As I had only been in the Circle 6 months and hadn't a clue what was expected or how to run it, I accepted as a co-president. I suspect that someone from the kayaking group suggested me since they referenced my excellent organizational skills. Yup, my years at Gillette sending out meeting notices, collating the responses and deciding on a meeting date have given me extraordinary skills, rarely found in suburban America. In other words, none of the members of longer standing wanted the job - or they'd already held it. I do have some ideas though. Anyone know how to set up a (1) Website that can have (2) interactive sign up sheets on it and (3) on which I can post an Excel document that everyone (even MAC users) can see?

As Brad mentioned, Warren is doing the Annisquam shuffle this summer. She started at Jeff and Maureen's and is now with us until July 1. She and I have been walking into Gloucester on Thursdays and taking the bus back. Last week we rewarded ourselves with a light lunch at a new coffee/tea shop about where the Black Crow was. The sandwiches were yummy, reasonably sized and reasonably priced. Since Warren keeps saying she will go to the family site, but either hasn't, or has but hasn't written any message, I'll let you know that she is in the middle of writing a new song. She says it is bluesy. Also, don't get your hopes up about lunching at Top Dog. We didn't get a discount, much less a freebie. In fact we have to tip big to help support her last year in college. Just don't tip big if Josh is going to get anything. Oh, but that's her story to tell.

Bear and I celebrated summer last night by taking the Whaler for a spin out in the bay then up river (or is it down). It has been in the water a week, but Bear's mother has been having health problems the last few weeks, so he has been busy taking her to the emergency room or to the doctors and spending nights at her house. The doctors don't think there is anything particularly wrong with her, but they're having difficulty wiping out an infection and determining the source of her pain. It doesn't help that she is allergic to a whole family of strong antibiotics. Right now she seems to be on the upswing, Bear is home, and now it is time to start cranking on the sailboat. Maybe we should start a pool re the date the Ancient Mariner gets in the water.

Still trying to figure out what to wear to The Wedding. It will probably depend on how many more walks into Gloucester I take. We get in Thursday night. See you all then.

Way to go Jeffrey!

This is copied from an e-mail from Maureen...

Kelly, Emily, (Shirley, Alice too)

Thought you might be interested in the Award your Dad got last night.

NYC Aids Housing Network gave him the Joseph Bostic AIDS Warrior Award
for his long term, behind the scenes efforts to support expanding
housing for those with AIDS / HIV.

One of the things he did, back in the 1990's, was to get NYC to drop
its maximum of 4 AIDs people per housing site limit, opening up equal
availability of housing for AIDs sufferers. He also arrange for one
of Princeton interns to work there for the last 6 years and has been a
management administration help since their beginning. I will send you
a copy of the program with a write-up on your Dad.

But, I wish you could have been there to see him receiving the award
for all his work by activitists who prided themselves in their
protests and police arrests.

It was a very nice event and I thought you guys might also like to
hear about it.

By the way, Kelly, the Director is leaving to move to Oakland. She is
a few years older then you I think. You would find her interesting.
Maybe, Dad can give you her email.

Love,
Mom

Note from Brad...

I have always been very proud of my big brothers...It is nice to know that other people are too! Both Nate and Jeff have done great things for the people of their communities.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

I had an appointment with Dr. Vernadakis on Friday and the reports really could not have been better! He joked that he needed to get me back in for the skin grafts before I healed up all on my own. The left side of the wound has healed so well and closed/shrunk so much that he probably won't have to graft at all but will just suture that side up. The rest of the wound which was much wider has shrunk a great deal as well (probably about 30%) so the amount of skin he will need will be much less. Since the donor site is going to be from my back, this is a REALLY good thing. It is a little more painful and a lot more inconvenient than having the donor site on my thighs where I can see and deal with it much more easily. As oppossed to setting up another appointment to see him he is having his scheduling nurse start to work on my next surgery date which will be within the next couple of weeks! I am going to need at least one more surgery after this but I may well take a bit of a break before finishing up with round three.

After the doctor, Mom and I continued northward for a weekend at Deb and John's in Annisquam. Warren is in residence and Jeff and Maureen's and they were up as well along with Alice. The weather kinda sucked on Saturday but we had a nice delayed Birthday dinner at the Beach Street Bistro in Rockport. It is run by Debbie, formerly of AYC and was delish! Sunday dawned (Okay, 9:30'd) bright and beautiful. John is down working on the boat, Mom and Deb are doing some gardening and we are about to drive to Rockport to have lunch at Top Dog, the gourmet hot dog shop where Warren is working for the summer.

Hope all are well and I will post and probably e-mail again when I know my next date for Lahey.

Hello!

As we all remembered Nate yesterday and tried to think of all of the fun things we have all done together, it was difficult not to feel sad and miss him. If he could see us today and understand are feelings I know he would be touched and feel the love we all have for him. I had hoped by now missing him would be less painful, but it is not, it is just different. Here's to Nathan and all that he was to all of us!

My sister has worked as a team mom, helped out with a variety of sports for kids over the year. Her company has a program which pays their employees for the time they spend with kids and volunteer programs. The check they receive is given to their favorite non profit which is Nate's Fund at the Colorado Rush, $690.00 will go to Nate's fund in about two weeks.

Thank you all for calling the Dove Inn and making reservations. I think Ruby and Frank will be staying with you as well. The wedding is coming along great and having fun putting things together. See you all soon in C-o-l-o-r-a-d-o. Yikes, it is just around the corner.

Annisquam for Sorrell and Dianna will be August 4TH give or take a day. Sorrell will be staying back east for about 3 weeks and Dianna, well who knows. I have joined the unemployed ranks as of May 16TH. I was laid off due to 5 homes cancelling due to the new home slump. We only build 30 homes per year so that was a big hit. I may stay a little longer than a week or just a week depending on the new job. At this point, I am thinking about working a temp. position and continuing to see my design clients and then look for employment after Annisquam. Not willing to give up Annisquam! Besides with the wedding, summer and all of those things happening this may be a great break.

Brad, wishing you a quick and healthy recovery!!!

Take care and enjoy the change of season!

FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET

WOW! I am going back into the hospital on Friday, May 18th. I saw Dr. Vernadakis on the 9th and he felt that I was healed well enough to move onto round 2. We were hoping for something in 2 to 4 weeks but it turned out there was a cancellation so away we go! I am very excited as this means that we are continuing along the path to a well Brad and it also increases the chance that I will be recovered enough to attend Kaela and Justin's wedding! If I hadn't taken the Friday date, the surgery scheduling nurse said it would be June before I got in.

This procedure, while encompassing a larger area is much more straightforward. Dr. V is scheduling 2 hours for surgery as opposed to the 8 hours last time. We are going to do it in 2 stages again. Removal (debreeding) and probably 5-7 days in the hospital and then home for 2 weeks with VACUUM bandages and then back in for grafting and another 5-7 days in the hospital.

I am also going to request that I get sent back to Southeast Sixth Floor for my recovery. I know all the nurses (and to be honest have a bit of a crush on one of them). She is 40 so it is more a crush than a fantasy! Maybe that is one of the reasons I am looking forward to going back.

Well that is about it for medical news. Mom and I had a great weekend staying and Jeff and Maureen's Annisquam digs. The weather was beautiful if perhaps a tad cool but the ocean views and sunsets were awesome. We had a lovely Mother's Day cookout at Deb and John's along with John's mom Dorothy, brother Kevin and his wife Candy.

Mom had her seminar on Japanese Art and I worked on the Doug Obey for Massachusetts State Representative campaign today. There is a special election tomorrow to fill a vacant seat. We are very confident as we are running against a democrat and an independent who has already said that if elected he will join the democratic party so he are hoping they split the vote and we elect the 24th Republican out of oh about 200 seats on Beacon Hill. Well, you have to crawl before you can walk.

Return from the sunny south

Annisquam gave us a sunny and relatively warm welcome home yesterday. I'm pretty much unpacked, but somebody else has the hall littered with moving detritus. The drive back from Sanibel was easier than the drive down (the only accident backup was less than 10 minutes), but the cats were a lot more vocal over their displeasure in being caged for hours on end. The overnight at the Red Roof in was uneventful and bagging Troika in the morning meant only holding up the king sized mattress and box springs while I snaked all the way under a bed, which had over the years apparently stymied all attempts to vacuum the carpet, to grab him. The overnight at John's sister's outside of D.C. was more eventful. John spent the night in the ground floor family room so the cats wouldn't be too frightened about being in a strange place (again). We blocked the stairway with two screen door packing boxes, one crosswise and one upright. However, the cats didn't stay with him. Since we were planning to leave at 05:00 we went to bed early, but at 12:20 John was upstairs trying to corral Minou. Later (or should it be earlier) I thought I heard Kobn thumping up the stairs, but pried my eyes open to see Troika's fluffy tail swish by. I chased him back downstairs, picked him up and threw him over the blocking wall. Then Tache came up for a visit. When I took her back down, I saw that she had wedged her way out between the packing box and the wall. I tightened that up. Then it was Minou's turn again. I gave up trying to sleep the rest of the night. In the morning Kobn and Baby were easy to capture and cage and Tache and Minou took only a couple of rounds around the dining room, but poor Troika had to be chased round and round the family room, then up and down stairs twice after he jumped the 6 foot barricade out of the FR and later back in. He finally gave up and let me pick him up and melted into the pillow in his cage. After being back a couple of hours, all of them seem to realize they are home and safe. Even Troika, after the trauma of yesterday's chase has let me walk up to him and pet him. They are complaining about being stuck inside. They loved the screened porch in Sanibel, as did I.

Happy birthday to Justin on Sunday. How did you break all those screws?

Brad, how come April 22 comes after May 7? Otherwise, I really appreciate your birthday list.

Beantown Update

Hey everybody. A couple of things going on. I met with my plastic surgeon, Dr. Vernadakis on thursday and he is pleased to report that I am completely healed from my initial surgery. I am meeting with him again on May 9th and we will hopefully plan a date for my next round of surgeries. This one will be to take care of some spots on my thighs, a couple of small spots around my original surgery area and the rather large area on my abdomen. This one will be a bit more straightforward as it is in a relatively flat area. We are probably going to do it in two stages again with first the removal of the infected skin followed by a short healing period and then skin grafts over the affected area. I will let everyone know when I have an actual date.

As most of you know I have been doing a lot of blogging during my recuperation. I got an e-mail from ThePolitico.com that one of my submissions "We Should Be So Lucky" from my political blog www.azamatterofact.blogspot.com has been picked up for publication in the printed version of ThePolitico for next week in their commentary section. Apparently it gets delivered to all the Hill offices as well as distributed free in DC. Who knows if anybody reads it but I think it is kinda cool that my first submission got chosen for publication.

I also got invited to watch the Republican Presidential Candidates debate at John McCain's New Hamphire office on Thursday. (I think making a donation probably had something to do with it.) But I think it will be a fun way to watch the debate and may give me an opportunity to make some contacts.

Well, I guess that is about it. Best wishes to all.

Justin's surgery was a success!

Justin and Kaela said...

Justin's surgery was a success! They removed 16 screws and 2 plates and we got to keep them! The doctor was a little shocked because 4 of the screws were broken and one of the plates had a crack in it. Dr. Scott did not seem to impressed by the other doctor's job. Justin is feeling sore and on some heavy drugs. They reconstructed the scar so the scar is sore because they sewed it up so tight. Justin is looking forward to his birthday next week and putting this elbow thing behind him!

Life goes on in Beantown

Mom and I are keeping busy....actually I think she is a little busier than I am. She has her Beacon Hill Seminars just finishing up World Affairs and now moving on to Japanese Art. She also goes to book club. I am not sure she cares about the books so much but rather loves the chance to get together with a group of friends that she really enjoys.

I am feeling very well and am ready to start talking to the Doctors about the next round of surgery. I will give an update when I have any news.

I took a bus ride up to Manchester New Hampshire on Wednesday to hear Senator McCain's speech as part of his campaign kickoff...as if anyone wasn't ware that he was running. Someone on the advance team was a little late in opting for the rain site so it turned into a cold soggy affair but I had never done something like that before so it was a fun day. I was able to find a spot in the first row to watch the speech and afterwards McCain surprised everyone including his security detail and went over to talk to some protesters. I happened to be on his path back to his bus so I got the opportunity to shake his hand and exchange a few words.

Mom and I went to the Huntington Theater tonight and saw a dark comedy, Persephone, by a new playwright Noah Haidle. It is about a statue (and the statue is the main character) and her observations of life over 500 years. It was okay and as always well done. I also figured out why I have kept seeing Victor Garber (Probably best known for his role in the movie Titanic as the ship's architect) around town as he is starring in Present Laughter at the Huntington starting in May.

Hope all are well. What's the latest news with you?

Brad

Hello everybody! Schools almost done for the year and the summer vacation is about to start for me and hopefully for all the other family members still doing the school thing. I'm glad that this blog was put together, thank you Uncle Brad, and hope we can all stay in touch, since this will make it so much easier to do so. I can't wait to see you all at Kaela and Justin's wedding and then shortly after in Annisquam! I hope to be keeping up with everyone now! See you all soon!

Life in San Francisco

I'll start with saying that I think this is an awesome idea and kudos Dad for getting it started! Life in San Francisco has taken a real up-swing this semester and things couldn't be better. I just started my second job working for JCrew. It makes my weekends a little hectic but hey thats part of the fun. Its also nice to see some real progress being made in my classes and hopefully two drawings I have been working on will be accepted into the Spring Show that our school holds every year. There are thousands of submissions and only a few hundred pieces actually get in so if I luck out it would be a big honor. So here's to hoping.
I just got back from Lugano a couple of weeks ago (thank you again Grandma and Dad for making it possible.) It was pretty unforgettable and hands down one of the greatest two weeks ever. The main draw was the bi-annual Caribbean Conference hosted by my professor and friend Dr. McCormick. It was fantastic! The keynote speaker was Maryce Conde who was absolutely inspiring and all together incredible. The first time I met her my friend Scott and I could barely form coherent sentences we were so nervous. Anyways you all should check out some of her books, Segu and I, Tituba being her most famous. I am about to start reading Segu. The real exciting news is that I had a long conversation with a Dr. McLeod of the University of Leeds in Yorkshire who saw my lecture on the book Geographies of Home and who is the head of the Caribean Literature Masters program and he wants me to stay in touch and ultimately apply to the school. It would be huge considering Leeds is one of the best schools for that subject. Granted there aren't a ton of schools specializing in Caribbean Literature but it is exciting nonetheless.
So that is what is going on right now for me. I am most excited though to be able to hop on the Bart in the next couple of days and see little Aidan for the first time. Again a big congratulations to Kelly and John! I hope all is well with everyone and cheers to the new family blog!

An Update from Kaela

Justin is having surgery on April 26th on his elbow. A year ago September he was in his dirt biking accident and had several screws and plates put in. He is having all but one plate removed and as many as the screws taken out as possible. They will also be doing a scar procedure because the first doctor did a wide scar so they are trying to tighten it so it is thiner. They had to move his nerve to the end of his elbow so if he bumps it it is painful so we are hoping the nerve can be moved to a better place. Kaela will be at the hospital all day Thursday! Kaela-303-718-7666 or Justin-303-718-7676. Love to all!

It's already working!

Mom had a question mark about Aidan's birthday and it turns out I was incorrect it is April 11th not the 10th...you can't believe everything you read in the news or on the web. And Justin's is 5/07...

I have also added Dad and Nate's birthday after consulting with Leslie...as she has said "They will always be part of our family." I guess I was influenced initially by mom who doesn't like remembering specific dates but all has been updated.
